Tides Of Man Interview

Staff writer Evan M. caught up with Tilian Pearson of Tides of Man. Here's what happened:

EM: Tides of Man is a very interesting band name. . . why did you choose this name for your band?

TP: "Tides Of Man" refers to the ebb and flow of man or the rise and fall of empires. It could also be taken as the "tidings" or tellings of mankind. When we started the band, we wanted our first album to be a story line, taking up broad topics: friendship, respect, love, regret, hate, mercy, revenge, forgiveness etc.

EM: You seem to have even more energy and passion doing live shows than you do recorded!!! What, to you, makes lives so much more special?

TP: Listening to an album and watching a live show should always be a different experience. We didn't really go into the studio with the intention of being able to play the exact versions of the songs live. We felt like it would limit both the live set and the album. It's a lot easier to get into the moment when you are playing live because you can feed off the ambiance. It's less forced.

EM: Your album debut is called "Empire Theory." What's the meaning of this title?

TP: The story line of the album ultimately portrays a message of forgiveness. "Empire Theory" refers the quote: "An Empire founded by war has to maintain itself by war." This is strengthened by Martin Luther King: "Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that."

EM: How do you feel about your tour with A Static Lullaby? Do you know each other well? What about Dance Gavin Dance and Emarosa?

TP: We are very happy to be on tour! Everyone we have met has been very kind and supportive. We didn't previously know any of those bands mentioned, but we are becoming friends.

EM: What do you think when you go on stage to sing? What's going through your mind when you look at your fans?

TP: At this point we are still a relatively new band, so I try to capture as many people's attention as I can. I make it a point to communicate to people individually from stage and look each person in the audience straight in the eye at one time or another. I try to show that I am interested in them rather than concentrating on being interesting.

EM: Your favorite song is? This can be your own, or someone else's.

TP: My favorite song right now is "Blackout" by Muse. Favorite song of ours is "Rescue," the last track on the Album.

EM: What inspires your style most?

TP: We each listen to a variety of music that influences what we write so really it depends on which one of us is answering this question. Bands that we can definitely agree on would be Radiohead, Bjork, The Mars Volta, As Cities Burn, Sigur Ros and The Dear Hunter.

EM: What was the strangest thing to ever happen to you on tour?

TP: Adam recently had his iPhone stolen and ransomed in Philadelphia. There was a standoff and undercover cops were involved. It was pretty epic.

EM: Favorite TV show? And why?

TP: I think we're all fans of "Lost." It's the most addictive and mysterious show I can think of.

EM: What are you reading now?

TP: "Into the Wild," "Gates Of Fire," "1984," and "State Of Fear."

EM: And again, what do you want to tell your fans?
